The architecture of New York & Chicago

The architecture of New York is the icon of the 20th century and a must-visit for anyone who’s interested in architecture. Chicago emerged from the economic depression and has become a model city in the U.S.

Impressive public spaces and magnificent buildings await its visitors. Enjoy its richness accompanied by our architect and emerge yourself in the Cosmopolitan culture and its architectural innovations.

Chicago doesn’t just offer skyscrapers like the Sears Tower. There are also impressive buildings that unite the subtle mix of Baroque, Art Deco, Neo-gothic and contemporary design.

Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term organic architecture and open floor, in which we can see impressive spaces that flow from one room to another. This concept is evident in what are called “Prairie-houses” in Illinois. We can visit part of his main work and follow his foot- steps in Oak Park, Illinois.

DAY 1 – NEW YORK (Flight)​

Flight previous day. Meet participants at hotel in the morning and afternoon. Meet in hotel lobby in the afternoon to discuss program.

Walk around Times Square. Dinner on your own.

 DAY 2 – NEW YORK

Breakfast. In the morning, visit the Flatiron Building, Ground Zero, Hub by Calatrava, Wall Street Beekman by F.
O. Gerhy, Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Storefront by S. Holl.

In the afternoon, Soho apartment by
J. Nouvel, New Museum by SANAA, School by A. Rossi, Greenwich Street project by Archi-Tectonis; shops and galleries in Soho, Greenwich Village and Chelsea, IAC Headquarters by F.
O. Gehry, Warren ST. by SOM, Perry West by R. Meier, Lehmann Maupin by R.Koolhaas, Apple Store, Moromoto by T. Ando.

Return to hotel.

Dinner and free evening.

 DAY 3 – NEW YORK​

Breakfast. In the morning, visit Midtown: 5th Avenue, Apple Store, Rockefeller Center, MOMA, Austrian Culture Forum, LVMH Tower by C. Portzamparc, Trump Tower, Sony Building, Seagram Building by M. Van Der Rohe, Met Life (ex-Pan-Am building).

In the afternoon, visit: Chrysler Building, Ford Foundation by Roche & Diinkeloo, UN headquarters by Le Corbusier, Morgan Library by Renzo Piano and Empire State Building.

Return to hotel, dinner and free evening.

DAY 4 – NEW YORK​

Breakfast. Morning tour of Central Park, Guggenheim Museum by F.L. Wright, and the Whitney Museum by Breuer, American Folk Art Museum.

In the afternoon, vista Times Square Tower, Random House Tower, Time Warner Center by SOM, New York Times by Renzo Piano, Reuters and Conde Nast Building by Fox & Fowie, Hearst Headquarters by Norman Foster, among others. Return on your own to hotel, dinner and free evening.

DAY 5 – NEW YORK – CHICAGO​

Breakfast, transfer to LaGuardia Airport and flight to Chicago. Arrive around to Chicago and take private bus to hotel. Visit: Art Institute (expansion by Renzo Piano), Millenium Park, Cloud Gate by A. Kapoor, J. Pritzker Pavilion and Footbridge
F. O. Gehry, Marina City, Hotel and Tower by MOS, Lake Point Tower, Chicago Spire
by Calatrava, Lake Shore apartments by Mies v.d. Rohe, Hancock Tower by SOM. Return to hotel, dinner and free evening.

Night in Florence.

 DAY 6 – CHICAGO

Breakfast. Guided tour of the Loop, historical and modern skyscrapers: Auditorium Building and the Carson Pirie Scott by L. Sullivan, Railway Exchange Build by C. B. Atwood, Reliance Building by D. Burnham, Symphony Center by Burnham & Root, Chicago Building by Holabird and Roche, the U.S. Post Office, IBM building, Chicago Federal Center by Mies van der Rohe, Merril Inland Steel Building and Sears Tower by SOM.

In the afternoon, take metro to Illinois Institute of Technology, Crown Hall by Mies van der Rohe, McCormick Trib. Campus Center by Koolhaas, Herman Hall by SOM, State St. Village by H. Jahn.

 DAY 7 – OAK PARK​

Breakfast. Travel to Oak Park; Guided tour of Frank L. Wright: Home & Studio, villa in Oak Park.

Visit Unity Temple by Frank L. Wright. In the afternoon, guided tour of interior and exterior of Robie House by F.L. Wright. Guided tour of Glessner House (1887) by Richardson.

Rest of the afternoon free. Return on your own to hotel. Dinner and free evening.

DAY 8 – CHICAGO​

Breakfast and free day in Chicago.

Possible optional day-trip to Plano to see Farnsworth House by Mies Van del Rohe.

Dinner and free evening.

DAY 9 – RETURN ​

Breakfast, rest until check out time.

Check out of hotel.

Travel to airport for check-in.

Flight to New York, clear passport control
and change planes for flight home.

Night on the plane.
