Finland: Alvar Aalto architecture
Finland is a country more vital and brilliant than one might expect. Surrounded by a beautiful natural environment of lakes and forests, we find exceptional buildings, among them some of the most important examples of modern architecture.
An architectural visit to Finland must include a tour through the Alvar Aalto architecture, one of the masters of 20th century architecture.
His extensive work is mainly found here. As we travel through Finland, we will take the opportunity to see other architecture: in Turku, Finland’s oldest city, we find a gothic cathedral and in Helsinki, from its city center of neoclassical building to the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art by Steven Holl, built in 1998.

Train station, Eliel Saarinen. Temppeliaukio Church, T & T Suomalainen. Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art, Steven Holl.
Night in Helsinki.
DAY 2 – HELSINKI – LAHTI JYVÄSKYLAÄ
Breakfast at the hotel. Organized tour in the morning: House and study of A. Aalto. We will also see the historical neoclassical city center: Senate Square, Cathedral, Government Palace, University and National Library (Carl Ludvig Engel), Presidential Palace, Market Square, City Hall. Parliament, Sibelius monument, Eila Hiltunen. National Pensions Building, A. Aalto.
From the hotel in Helsinki we will travel by bus to Lahti. Visit Church of the Cross, A. Aalto. From Lahti we will travel by bus to Jyväskylä.
Check in and night in Jyväskylä.
DAY 3 – JYVÄSKYLAÄ
Breakfast ar the hotel. Morning visits to: Jyväskylä Workers Club, Viitatorni Apartments, Nuora House, Aira Apartments, Defense Building, University of Jyväskylä (Main teaching building, former student residence, “Lozzi” cafeteria, “Lythy” Professor meeting room, pool, Physical Education building).

Return to hotel. Dinner and free evening.
Night in Jyväskylä.
DAY 4 – SÄYNÄTSALO AND SEINÄJUKI
Breakfast at the hotel. Meeting to prepare for the day’s tour. Säynätsalo City Hall, Muurame Church, Experimental House in Muuratsalo A. Aalto.
Lunch on your own. Travel by bus from Jyväskylä to Seinäjoki. Check in hotel, dinner and free evening.Night in Seinäjoki.
DAY 5 – NOORMARKKU – RAUMATURKU
Breakfast at the hotel. Places to visit in Seinäjoki: Defense Corps Building, Cultural and Administrative center, Church and parochial center, City Hall, Library, Government offices and theater.
All by A. Aalto. Bus from Seinajöki to Noormarkku and lunch on your own. Visit Villa Mairea by A. Aalto. Bus from Noormarkku to Rauma. Visit former center of Rauma. Bus from Rauma to Turku.

Night in Turku.
DAY 6 – TURKU – PAIMIO – HELSINKI
Breakfast in the hotel. Exterior tour of Turku: Agricultural Cooperative Building, Apartment buildings, Turun Sanomat newspaper building, all by A. Aalto. Castle (13th – 16th century) and Cathedral 13th century).
Bus from Turku to Paimio. (half an hour) Sanatorium A. Aalto. Lunch on your own. Bus from Paimio to Hvitträsk. Visit house and study of Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen. Return from Hvitträsk to Helsinki. Lodging in Helsinki. Check in hotel, dinner and free evening. Night in Helsinki.
DAY 7 – HELSINKI – ESPOO
Breakfast in the hotel. Bus from Helsinki to Espoo (regular line). Helsinki University of Technology, Alvar Aalto architecture: main building, sports center, Electrical center, Student residence, Library, Water Tower.
Return to Helsinki, lunch and free afternoon in the city. Return to hotel. Night in Helsinki.
DAY 8 – HELSINKI AND RETURN
