Italian architecture: visit Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome

Italy is a must-visit for anyone interested in architecture. Historically, it has been a pilgrimage site for artists from all over the world who did not consider their education complete until they had spent time in the eternal city. Multiple trips are necessary to really get to know Italy, the country that never disappoints and always impresses architecture enthusiasts.

Although in 9 days it’s impossible to cover all of the architecture in Italy, we will attempt to get an idea of the evolution of the city from the imperial era up to our time, visiting fundamental monuments and the most characteristic examples of each time period.

We will visit from the monuments of Ancient Rome (Coliseum, Imperial Fora, Pantheon…) to the newest examples of contemporary italian architecture (Parco della Musica by Renzo Piano and Maxxi Museum by Zaha Hadid) without forgetting, of course, the beautiful renaissance and baroque Rome (St. Peter’s Basilia, San Carlo alle Cuatro Fontane,…).

We will travel to Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome.

DAY 1 – MILAN (Flight)​

Arrival of flight to Milan. Private bus to hotel. Check in Hotel.

Tour city center: Duomo (cathedral), Galeria Vittorio Emanuele, Sforzesco Castle, Sempione Park and Arena.

Free evening. We recommend: San Lorenzo and I Navigli (canals); Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese.

Night in Milan.

 DAY 2 – MILAN

Breakfast. Morning tour of La Scala opera house, Santa Maria della Grazie church (“The Last Supper” fresco by Da Vinci), Brera Art Gallery.

Wewill also see modernandcontemporary architecture in Milan: Pirelli Tower by Gio Ponti, “New Trade Fair” by Maximiliano and Doriana Fuksas, Armani Theater by Tadao Ando and Contemporary Art Pavilion (PAC).

Triennale di Milano, San Alemagna (Museum of Design and Architecture).

 DAY 3 – MILAN – VENICE​

Breakfast and check out of hotel.

Travel by train Milan (Stazione Centrale)
– Venice (Santa Lucia). Approx. 3-hour journey.

Arrive, check in hotel. Visit St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, St. Mary of Health Basilica, Rialto Bridge, Accademia Bridge, Bridge over the Great canal of Calatrava, IUAN Bridge by Carlo Scarpa. Grassi Palace by Tadao Ando.

Night in Venice.

DAY 4 – VENICE – FLORENCE​

Breakfast and check out of hotel. Visit Guggenheim Museum in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. Querini Stampalia Foundation by Carlo Scarpa and renovation by Mario Botta. Zone of Bienal with pavilions by Alvar Aalto, Gerrit Rietvelt and Carlo Scarpa, among others.

Travel to train station for journey to Florence. Duration: approx. 2.5 hours. Arrival, check in hotel in Florence.

Night in Florence.

DAY 5 – FLORENCE​

Breakfast. Organized visits in Florence: Uttizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, Ponte Vechio, Palazzo Vechio, Santa Maria de Novella Basilica, Santa Croce Basilica.

Florence Cathedral, Basilica of San Lorenzo, Gioto’s Bell Tower and Florence Baptistry by Sant Giovanni.

Night in Florence.

 DAY 6 – FLORENCE – ROME

Breakfast and check out. Transport to train station. Train Florence (Santa Maria Novella) – Rome (Termini). Duration: approx. 1hour 40 min. Arrive at hotel in Rome and check-in.

Visit Coliseum, Imperial Fora, Palatine Hill, Trajan’s Market, Piazza Venezia, Capitoline Hill, Church of the Gesú, Pantheon, St. Ignazio, St.Ivo alla Sapienza, San Luigi dei Francesi, Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Farnese.

Night in Rome.

 DAY 7 – ROME​

Breakfast. Visit churches San Pietro in Vincoli, Santa Mª Maggiore, San Carlo alle Cuatro Fontane, and Sant’Andrea al Quirinale, Quirinale Hill, Trevi Fountain, Piazzas di Spagna and Popolo, Villa Borghese.

St. Peter’s Basilica, Castel Sant’Angelo, Ara Pacis by Richard Meier, Tiber Island, Trastevere, S. Pietro in Montorio church. Marcello Theater, Forum Boario, Bocca della Veritá, Circus Maximum, Baths of Caracalla. Night in Rome.

DAY 8 – ROME​

Breakfast. Tour of modern and contemporary architecture: Auditorium Parco della Musica by Renzo Piano, Palazetto dello Sport by Luigi Nervi, Olimpico Village.

Maxxi Museum by Zaha Hadid, Forum Italico, “Jubilee” church, Richard Meier.
Night in Rome.

DAY 9 – ROME AND RETURN​

Breakfast and check out of hotel.
Free morning in Rome.

Transport to Rome airport.

Return flight to UK.
