The architecture of Chicago through F. Ll. Wright and Mies van der Rohe

Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term organic architecture. The central idea is that building should be the stem from the natural environment.

Another of his fundamental contributions to modern architecture of chicago was his knowledge of plant life, with which he created impressive spaces that flow from one room to the other.

This concept is evident in what are called “prairie- houses” in Illinois. After living in various locations,  he settled in Taliesin, Wisconsin, where he built his own house and a studio-school inspired by teacher-student relationships.

We can see part of his main works and follow his steps through the United States. Along the way, we will see building by other masters like Mies Van der Rohe on a tour that will take us to Illinois, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

DAY 1 – CHICAGO

Arrive at Chicago International Airport. Transfer to hotel.

Afternoon tour: Art Institute (expansion by Renzo Piano), Millennium Park, Cloud Gate by A. Kapoor, J. Pritzker Pavillion and Footbridge F. O. Gehry, Aqua Build by Loewenberg & Studio Gang (under construction), Marina City by B. Goldberg, Trump Hotel and Tower of the MOS, Lake Point Tower by J. Heinrich & G. Schipporeit, Chicago Spire by Calatrava (under construction), Lake Shore apartments by Mies v.d. Rohe, Hancock Tower by SOM.

 DAY 2 – CHICAGO

Breakfast. Visit the Loop, modern and historical skyscrapers: Carson Pirie Scott by L. Sullivan, Railway Exchange Build by C. B. Atwood, Reliance Building by D. Burnham, Building Symphony Center by Burnham & Root, the Chicago Building by Holabird y Roche, The U.S. Post Office, IBM building, Chicago Federal Center by Mies van der Rohe, Merrill Inland Steel Building and the Sears Tower by SOM.

In the afternoon, take the metro to Illinois Institute of Technology, Crown Hall by Mies van der Rohe, Mc Cormick Trib.

Campus Center by Koolhaas, Herman Hall by SOM, State St. Village by H. Jahn.

 DAY 3 – OAK PARK​

Breakfast at the hotel. First thing in the morning, we will travel to Oak Park; guided tour of Frank L. Wright: Home & Studio, villa in Oak Park. Visit Unity Temple by Frank L. Wright.

In the afternoon, we will travel to Robie House de F.L. Wright for a guided tour of the inside and outside Organized tour of Glessner House (1887) by Richardson.

Travel to Racine by private bus. 4.5-hour journey. Arrive at hotel in Racine and check in.

DAY 4 – RACINE​

Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to the Johnson Wax Headquarters by F. LL. Wright. 2-hour journey. Tours of the Administration Building F. LL. Wright and Fortaleza Hall, by Norman Foster.

Visit The Frank Lloyd Wright Library and Reading Room by SC Johnson. In the afternoon, travel to Spring Green, Wisconsin (Taliesin) by private bus. 4-hour journey.

Arrive at Spring Green Hotel and check in.

DAY 5 – SPRING GREEN – TALIESIN​

Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to the house, country home and study of F. LL Wright. Taliesin, Spring Green, Wisconsin.

Visit Taliesin and possibly join an organized tour (from 1 to 4 hours) or take a private tour.

Travel by private bus to Plano, Illinois. Approx. 4-hour journey.

Arrive in Plano and check into hotel.

 DAY 6 – PLANO

Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to Farnsworth House by Mies Van der Rohe. Guided tour of the house. 20 minutes inside the house and 1 hour outside accompanied by an expert from the foundation.

Private bus to Chicago Airport. 1.5-hour journey. Arrive at airport for check in. Flight Chicago- Pittsburg. Arrive at airport in Pittsburg.

Transfer to hotel and check in.

 DAY 7 – CHICAGO – MILL RUN​

Breakfast at the hotel. Travel to Fallingwater house. 1.5-hour journey.

Guided tour of Fallingwater by F. LL Wright.

Travel 15 minutes to Kentuck Knob House. Guided tour of Kentuck Knob House, by F. LL Wright. Return to hotel in Pittsburg. 1.5-hour journey.

DAY 8 – PITTSBURG​

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the center of Pittsburg. This includes, among others:
