Modernism is a cultural movement that had its heyday between the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century. It incorporated the most restarted trends in literature, theater, architecture, fine arts and decoration. As a style, it is characterized by the predominance of curved lines, asymmetry, the use of plant motifs and the fusion of the functional and the aesthetic. The movement received distinct names in different countries. You can find examples of modernism in Barcelona in lots of spots and hidden buildings as it was one of the most important artistic periods for the city.
In Catalonia, the Eixample district of Barcelona became the most important focus of modernism. In the field of architecture, the most important figures were Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí is the most emblematic architect of the city and Barcelona would not be the same without his contribution. Its buildings are masterpieces that need to be admired.
